It’s back to school for more than 10,000 students in the Vineland Public School District as classes resumed on Thursday for the start of the 2023-24 school year.
Clear skies and warm temperatures greeted the excited students, setting a cheerful tone for the start of the academic year. There were typical first-day bus delays as parents adjust to the new routine and drivers became familiar with their routes.
A workforce of nearly 2,000 was ready to greet the students from preschool to grade 12. While minor issues occurred with so many students in so many buildings, Superintendent Alfonso Llano was confident that staff and administration made every effort to resolve the issues quickly. Members of central administration visited many of the district’s 14 schools and will continue to do so for the rest of the week.
“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our incredible staff members for their tireless efforts in preparing for this moment,” Llano said. “Best wishes to all of you for a successful and inspiring year ahead."
Some schools in the district will see new administrative faces this year. Sophia Heredia-Torres takes over as principal at Sabater Elementary School. Jorge Garcia and Madeline Galan, both assistant principals, swapped places this year, with Garcia moving to Sabater and Galan to Wallace Middle School.
Teachers wasted no time getting their classes acclimated to their new schedules, with many jumping right into lessons after going over classroom rules and expectations. The Portrait of a Graduate program, an initiative based on developing skills that will support the success of our students beyond high school, was also officially launched today. The six competencies will be worked into lessons and character education programs across all schools this year.
