In the hallways of Vineland High School, there's a palpable sense of pride and purpose radiating from a special group of students—the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) cadets. Here, each cadet is not just a part of a program; they're part of a tight-knit community bound by shared values of service, leadership, and excellence.
Led by the dedicated cadets and instructors, Master Sergeant James Eubanks and JoDenise Muller, the VHS AFJROTC is more than just a class—it's a way of life. With 124 cadets, every event, every drill, and every moment is an opportunity to make a difference, both within our school walls and in the wider community. These young leaders are the epitome of community engagement, lending a hand wherever it’s needed.
This school year has been nothing short of remarkable for the AFJROTC. The 124 cadets have participated in 24 community service events, totaling an impressive 1,655 hours of service or 14.45 hours per cadet. The program recently achieved a significant milestone with a comprehensive inspection, the first since 2017. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, the cadets showcased their dedication and discipline, earning a "meets plus" distinction in all seven categories, including leadership, uniform inspection, instructors and curriculum, drill and ceremony, community service, physical fitness, and overall effectiveness. This outstanding achievement reflects the program's commitment to excellence and the exemplary guidance of instructors M. Sgt. Eubanks and Mrs. Muller, who were honored with challenge coins. Additionally, Cadet Lieutenant Jayda Givins and Cadet Major Luna Hernandez were recognized for their outstanding performance and dedication to the AFJROTC.
The dedication to service and community was one of the contributing factors that led the unit to be invited to the Coast Guard Training Center in Cape May later this month. Spearheaded by Mrs. Muller and Cadet Austin Conrad, recruits from the training center were provided with a place to call home on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The recruits are able to enjoy a warm and welcoming environment, a home-cooked meal, and the opportunity to contact loved ones back home. The Coast Guard, impressed by the unit’s service, will be giving junior and senior cadets a specialized tour through the facility.
This Friday, the cadets are hosting the second annual “Run for Ramirez” to raise funds for a scholarship in honor of former AFJROTC instructor Master Sergeant Joseph Ramirez, who passed away unexpectedly in 2022. The scholarship will be presented for the first time at the end of this school year to one male and female graduating cadet who has made an impact in the AFJROTC. The run costs $10 to enter and is open to any VHS student. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the scholarship fund or donate items such as bagged snacks, disposable cups, or other items is welcome to contact JoDenise Muller at jmuller@vineland.org
As the academic year draws to a close, the AFJROTC at Vineland High School stands as a beacon of service and excellence. With their unwavering dedication and outstanding achievements, these cadets have not only surpassed expectations but have also embodied the values of leadership and community engagement. Their commitment not only defines their present but also sets a promising course for the program's future, ensuring that the spirit of camaraderie, service, and leadership they've fostered continues to flourish.
