On Thursday, January 23rd, Mrs. Madeline Galan, Mr. Alberto Jimenez, and Ms. Gracie Galan held an informational meeting at the Veterans Memorial School auditorium for the first-ever middle school international trip offered to students.
Students will travel to England for 8 days in the summer of 2026. Over 50 parents/guardians and families showed up to learn about this fantastic opportunity to explore the world. This amazing trip is open to all middle school students, parents, and VPS employees. (Please note that this trip is not sponsored by VPS).

Vineland High School’s AFJROTC recently enjoyed a visit from Mr. Ed Benish, a former Vineland Vice Principal of Sabater School. Benish brought the AFJROTC program to Vineland High in 2009, and it is now known as Unit NJ2009-1. After hearing of the unit’s outstanding inspection, he wanted to visit and congratulate all the cadets for their hard work and give a little history on how and why he worked so hard to have the Air Force grant Vineland High School the program. During his visit, he talked to the cadets about the JROTC program and what high school was like when he was here. He also encouraged us to take advantage of all the opportunities JROTC offers to help us succeed after graduation. Cadets thanked him for his time and service in the United States military and also for his dedication to the Vineland High School. Many cadets over the years have passed through C114 in the Tanner Building, known as the AFJROTC room, because of Mr. Benish.
On Monday, January 20, 2025, members of the Color Guard performed the Posting of The Colors for the MLK event presented by VAACDC and hosted by Mr. Albert Porter. Cadets helped set tables, greet honored guests, and provided needed support throughout the day. We are very proud of our cadets as several in all flights received their ribbons for earned achievements such as academic, attendance, and Wellness for the first marking period. For many of our first-year cadets, this is the first of many ribbons and awards they have the opportunity to earn this year.

Our kindergarten writers in Mrs. Brown’s class at Mennies had a blast exploring writing topics this week!
The lesson began with students learning about all the topics their teacher enjoys writing about. Then, they worked in groups to discuss the topics they love and could write about. To keep the inspiration flowing, students created writing maps to store in their writing folders. These maps will be a helpful tool when they encounter writer’s block and need ideas.
The students were so excited to start writing about their favorite topics—what a great way to spark creativity and enthusiasm for writing!
Students in Mrs. Catellini’s 2nd-grade class at Mennies had a wonderful time rotating through MLK Student Centers! They worked together on engaging activities, including:
Discussing character traits of Martin Luther King Jr.
Coloring bookmarks featuring his inspiring message.
Solving hands-on puzzles with different shapes.
Listening to a story about Dr. King.
Completing a sorting activity about peace makers and peace breakers.
The students left inspired and are excited to continue spreading peace and kindness throughout Mennies.
Students in Ms. Caterina’s 2nd-grade class at Mennies spent time learning all about Martin Luther King Jr.. They listened to a story about Dr. King, explored his message of peace, and learned about his incredible contributions to history.
To conclude the lesson, students discussed how peace begins with them and shared their own dreams for spreading peace in the world. What an inspiring and meaningful way to honor Dr. King’s legacy!
This week Dallago’s favorite musician & singer, Yosi, came in for a multicultural performance!
Students were not only able to just sing and dance along - this time they also were able to view and listen to different instruments from around the world!
Instruments were from countries including Africa, Australia, India, Egypt, & more!
We learned how to say hello in many languages and closed out each assembly with a “friends around the world” song.
After holding 3 assemblies in the gym he went and held a sensory-friendly performance in one of our classrooms.

Miss Welden and Ms. Franco’s ELA students have been studying the concept of sustainable living at Pilla Middle School. Recently, they completed the Hunger Games PBL, where they researched NJ crops and how to farm them organically and conventionally. Students collaborated in small groups to write a grant proposal and formulate a presentation to ask for $100,000 to start a sustainable farm in Vineland.
Vineland High School senior Michaela Giuliani won the 2025 VHS Poetry Out Loud Champion title for the second year in a row on Wednesday, January 15th, during the school-level competition held in the VHS South Auditorium.
Giuliani was one of nine students from VHS North and South who vied for the top spot at the school and a chance to move on to the Region 2 competition at Stockton University on February 13th, according to Vanessa Rasmussen, AP English teacher, Poetry Out Loud Coordinator, and English Department Chairperson at the high school. Rasmussen also serves on the NJ State Poetry Out Loud Teacher Advisory Council.
Competing along with Giuliani, who has participated in Poetry Out Loud for three years, were Sheilitza De La Rosa, Marley Smith, Iris Giocondo, and this year’s Runner-Up, Mikaya Caputo, who have all participated in Poetry Out Loud for two years, and newcomers Sofia Bozhenko, Aalilah Folk, Christopher Gagnon, and Paulina Tomlin. Giuliani advanced from the Region 2 finals competition and competed in the New Jersey State Poetry Out Loud competition last year.
“I am very proud of all of our students’ hard work, creativity, and insight,” Rasmussen said. “In class, we work on Poetry Out Loud because it improves writing, analytical, and speaking skills. Working with poetry and recitation can also help students develop empathy and increase their self-confidence. This year, I am especially proud of our students’ ability to advocate for themselves and support each other. Our students each chose wonderful poems and interpreted them with sensitivity and originality. I am also proud of the supportive and encouraging audience of VHS students, most of whom have been through the Poetry Out Loud classroom experience and know what it feels like to recite poems from memory!”
The students were judged by Mrs. Adaliz DeJesus, World Languages Teacher; Mr. Daniel Kuzma, Social Studies Teacher; Mrs. Noelle Patel, Literacy Coach and English Teacher; Ms. Becky Linton, English Teacher; Mrs. Natalie Reynolds, Media Specialist, who served as Accuracy Judge; and Mrs. Jennifer Laning, English Language Arts Supervisor, who served as Prompter and Tally Judge. Scores were determined by the Poetry Out Loud official rubric, which evaluates physical presence, voice and articulation, interpretation, evidence of understanding, accuracy, and overall performance.
Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. Participating teachers use the Poetry Out Loud toolkit to teach poetry recitation and run classroom competitions. Students select, memorize, and recite poems from an anthology of more than 700 classic and contemporary poems. The competition begins at the school level before advancing to regional and then state competitions. The winner of the state competition wins a trip to the National Finals in Washington, DC, where they have a chance at winning $20,000. Since the program began in 2005, more than 4.3 million students and 76,000 teachers from 19,000 schools and organizations across the nation have participated in Poetry Out Loud.
Wallace sixth-grade Language Arts teachers, Mrs. Priest and Mrs. Shapley, are teaching a weather unit, so they invited Nor’Easter Nick to come and speak to their students. On January 22, Nick spoke to them not only about weather, weather forecasting, and the company that he created, Norcast Weather, but also about overcoming obstacles and challenges in life. The students enjoyed asking him questions at the end. Thanks for everything, Nor’Easter Nick!
