Week 2 is complete at the Extended School Year Program for our students! This week we would like to highlight our volunteer work at the South Jersey Animal Shelter where students assembled enrichment treats for the animals on July 18. After the work was completed, they went over to the new Chick-Fil-A for a behind-the-scenes tour and some lunch. The students were practicing skills such as staying within an allotted budget, speaking to the staff so that they were clear in their order, counting the correct amount of change, and skills required when eating in a fast food restaurant. Also pictured is some fun at ShopRite last week and a trip to the Home Depot on Thursday! The students are very excited to be able to learn within the community during these experiences and look forward to sharing their weekly adventures.

Last week, Mennies therapy dogs Cole and Alice visited students in the ESY program at Sabater. They spread lots of four-legged love and their message that a disability is not an inability, it can become a superpower!

The Extended School Year program got off to a great start with students going out to Work Based and Community-Based Learning Experiences. Mr. Lonergan took his students to work at Vineland High School to do some cleanup of the RISE garden, as well as water and begin planting for a fall harvest. After some morning time at the high school, they went to Lowe's where they received a lesson on locating items in the store. They finished off with a scavenger hunt and purchased some soil for another project. Ms. Hirleman's class also got out into the community this week when they started their ESY project. Over the next few weeks, the students will help clean and create a garden at the ARC of Cumberland County, a local non-profit community agency that supports children and adults with disabilities. They will clean the garden area, use appropriate tools and safety apparel and add soil to the garden beds. They will help create an environment that the students and adults at the ARC can continue to support by planting plants, flowers, and vegetables. They will also water and maintain the garden until the RISE agricultural program at VHS can continue to monitor it throughout the year.
An underlying part of the lesson that happens naturally is how to take care of yourself in the heat and on the job. Class discussions and practices in the community include the need to drink plenty of fluids, taking breaks, using sunscreen, and following weather reports to identify the coolest part of the day to do outdoor work. Our teachers keep a watchful eye and use their best judgment when it comes to working on these trips.
Come and join the Cohansey Soccer Club for their free Cohansey Premier Juniors Program. This program will run for 8 weeks starting Thursday, September 7. The program will introduce players to soccer and develop techniques, understanding, and love for the game. During these sessions, your child will learn to be creative with a ball at their feet and develop an understanding of soccer. The program is intended for players who are looking to get on professionally coached teams (in the future) and be inside a club with a family environment that is organized and progressive. The students in Mrs. Nonnemacher's class during ESY had an adventure after reading "There was an Old Woman who Swallowed a Shell". The students participated in a hands-on sequence activity followed by an independent cut-and-paste sequence activity. Great job!

Students in Deborah McClain’s fifth-grade classes took part in a Living Museum last week as part of their American Revolution studies. Each student took the part of a historical figure from the American Revolutionary Era in our fight for freedom and the formation of our government. Students made their own backdrop and spoke to museum visitors telling them their part in the United States history. The museum also featured projects and writing of students throughout our interdisciplinary studies of English Language Arts and Social Studies. Amazing work by all of the students!
