Mennies School celebrated our monthly character trait, resilience, at the first Mennies Marvelous Monday Assembly of the year. Fifth-grade students took the lead in planning and running the assembly for the entire school. During the event, students participated in a resilience activity with Mrs. Weir and were awarded character badges for demonstrating resilience. In October, we will focus on Respect and continue celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. We are so proud of our Mennies friends for showing outstanding character throughout the first month of school!
Kindergarten students in Ms. Kreck's library class at Mennies Elementary School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by exploring the vibrant culture of Mexico. Ms. Kreck read them a story, showed them where Mexico is on the map, and displayed the Mexican flag. The students then colored their own Mexican flags, which are now proudly displayed at the school entrance. Mennies is excited to continue honoring Hispanic Heritage Month!

Students at Little Lamb Preschool had the opportunity to enjoy an apple press presentation by farmers Eric and Aaron from Quiver Farm in PA. The students saw how to press apples to make delicious apple cider. They also were able to enjoy live animals on school property, including a donkey, piglet, four rabbits, and two ducks. They also learned that once the cider is made, the remainder of the apples are fed to the animals on the farm.
Last week, Mrs. Myerson's first graders began their introduction to Science! It started with a Walking Water experiment that got the students curious and mesmerized! We made predictions, drew what we observed, and discussed how the water “walked” from cup to cup. Throughout the rest of the week, we decorated our Science folders, learned about the scientific method, got a glimpse into the three types of science units we will be studying this year, and finally, we wrote about how we can all be scientists!
Rossi Room Buddies from Mrs. Jones's 1st-grade class and Mrs. Bonsall's 5th-grade class enjoyed a lesson about apples on John Chapman's birthday! They learned facts about apples, including varieties of apples, vitamins in apples, why apples turn brown when we leave them cut, and the best part: tasted apples, apple sauce, apple butter, and juice together!
The VHS Dance studio is full of eager and excited Dance 1 students this year! These Dance 1 students are off to such a great start, displaying a great work ethic, positive attitudes, and true support of one another. Ms. Hall is looking forward to their progress over the year!
This week, Mrs. Schiavone’s Project Lead The Way students learned about the devastating effects of oil spills and their impact on wildlife, coastal ecosystems, and the economy. The students also learned about oil spills from years past and the financial and environmental costs associated with the clean-up. Their project included creating an ocean and an oil spill in their ocean, and they were given a budget to purchase cleaning products and clean up their "oceans!" They were amazed at the difficulty in the clean up, the devastating impact both long and short term, the financial costs, and the importance of oil daily.
Communication skills, commitment, and a positive attitude are just a few qualities that make a good team player. Johnstone Jaguars in Ms. Rivera’s team-building class played ‘Minute to Win It’ games to further develop these skills. 6th-grade students cheered on their team and even the opposing teams as they earned points by completing various challenges in under 60 seconds.
Ms. Rivera said, “Learning team building in middle school has an abundance of benefits. In just three short weeks, I have seen an improvement in the 6th graders’ confidence in communication, self-esteem, and collaboration skills.”

On September 25th, during all lunch periods, Vineland High School Asselta students had the opportunity to speak with Ms Morris (School Social Worker) and/or a RAFT counselor about available mental health resources to youth in Cumberland County. Additionally, students were provided resources to practice mindfulness and how they could be a "life saver" to someone in need preventing suicide by calling 988 or the 2nd Floor hotline.

First-grade students in Mrs. Nonnemacher’s class at Petway are learning to count by twos, fives, and tens. In this activity, the students are practicing their excellent math skills by working together to count by tens. Our school motto, "We All Swim Together," connects with our school-wide expectations of respect, responsibility, kindness, and acceptance. Students receive tickets for displaying "Whaley Fin-tastic Behavior" according to these expectations. We are whaley proud of our students who have been recognized so far!
