On Friday, May 31, Michele Geiger from Cross County Connection came in to give the RISE students a lesson on how to navigate the NJ Transit System in an effort to increase their independence and range as they begin to look for jobs in adulthood. Ms. Geiger discussed safety when using public transportation, as well as how to find the information that is needed to travel from one destination to another. On Wednesday, June 5th, Ms. Geiger and Ms. Latifah returned to take ten of our students, assisted by VPS staff, on a trip across town to the ShopRite on Delsea Drive, seeking job opportunities. Once they checked in at the supermarket, students ate their lunch at Chick-fil-A and returned back to school using the transit system. While on the trip, students learned important lessons about punctuality and flexibility, as not every bus will run on time, and in some cases, the bus may pass by, causing a change in plans. It was a very valuable lesson for our students!

Mrs. Rowe’s class at Mennies Elementary has been learning about the life cycle of frogs and caterpillars. Students even got to enjoy watching the caterpillar's life cycle happen right in front of their eyes: from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterflies! Students made crafts and even had a butterfly release party to celebrate.

Rossi Elementary School fourth graders had the opportunity to learn about rain gardens and their environmental benefits. The American Littoral Society visited with the fourth-grade students, showing them how the rain gardens at Rossi School are habitats for all kinds of organisms that are helpful to the environment. The students went on a scavenger hunt to find some of the organisms found in the rain garden. They also learned how to weed and care for the rain gardens so the plants have a healthy environment to flourish. The students helped to plant some plants and flowers in the rain garden. On May 28th, AMSA's AP Research students invited teachers, administration, and student peers to discuss their compelling, year-long AP Research studies in a gallery-walk symposium format. Researchers created and shared their Research presentations and posters with attendees wherein they chronicled their Research journey from their initial interest in the topic of their choice to the development of their Research questions, implementation of their methods, and ultimately, their findings. Student Researchers designed presentations to be interactive, and addressed student and staff questions on wide-ranging topics such as Vietnam Veterans and Contemporary-Era Soldiers' Interpretations of Representation in War Films, Effects of Childhood Trauma on Music Lyric Perception, and the LGBTQ+ Community Representation in Fighting Games.

Some great summer opportunities from the Boys and Girls Club!

On Wednesday, May 22, the year's final Bilingual Advisory Committee meeting was held at Sabater. Committee Coordinator Jessica Mercado Santana organized a true extravaganza. Ms. Mercado and colleague Shirley Santos demonstrated different ways that parents could use common household items or items easily purchased from the dollar store to keep their students learning over the summer. Parents left with their hands full of books, pool noodles, and a packet of various items, along with instructions in English or Spanish on how to use the items to further student learning. A large group of service learning volunteers from Vineland High School helped entertain the children with different activities in the gym next door. Well over 200 people were in attendance. The meeting marked the final Bilingual Advisory meeting for the Supervisor of Multilingual Learning and Performing Arts, Dr. JoAnne Negrin. Dr. Negrin was presented with a book written by the 5th-grade bilingual students. Each child had colored the flag of their country and written about what being in a bilingual education program means to them. The teachers then presented Dr. Negrin with a scrapbook filled with pictures from her 12 years in the district and cards from the staff of schools across Vineland.
