Durand students and staff love their FriYAYs, especially when it's a Fins Up FriYAY! One time per month, special guests join Durand administration, staff, and of course, the school mascot, Skipper the Dolphin, in welcoming students to school and celebrating the end of a wonderful week. This week Officer Cassidy from the Vineland Police Department and Mr. Mike Hall and Ms. Dana Blakely from the Transportation Department joined in the celebration. Music can be heard in the car rider and bus lanes along with big smiles of excitement as students arrive to school. Students are greeted with fist bumps, high-fives, hugs, and cheers as they walk into the building. It is a great way to celebrate students and show them how happy Durand staff is to see them at school. Future Fins Up Fridays will include visits from the Vineland Fire and EMS departments, along with many other special guests.
In Mrs. Tarzopoulos' kindergarten class at Durand Elementary School. students have been learning all about apples and how they grow. Students learned that there are so many different kinds of apples. They had the opportunity to taste 3 different kinds, Red Delicious (red), Granny Smith (green), and Golden Delicious (yellow). After students tasted the apples, they picked the color they liked best. After all the votes were counted, this sweet group of students liked Golden Delicious (yellow) the best! Students in Room 5 enjoyed their appley delicious day!
Dallago Preschool celebrated the Week of Respect with spirit days that included: dressing as their favorite superhero for “I Can Be a Super Friend” day, wearing tie dye clothing to represent “Peace, Love, & Kindness”, wearing team shirts to “Team Up Against Bullying”, and pajama day because “Respecting Friends is a Dream Come True”. Students also participated in lessons throughout each day where they learned how to respect their classroom materials and environment, identify emotions, and come together as a team.
This week in Ms. Espinosa’s bilingual science classes at Wallace Middle School, 6th graders learned about how water moves. They created landforms using aluminum trays, beakers, and newspapers, then sprayed water onto their landforms to see how the water would move. Students got creative and created landforms such as mountains, plateaus, valleys, and more.
Seventh graders learned about convection. We placed a cup of hot (red) water over a cup of cold (blue) water with a plastic sheet separating them. When the plastic sheet was removed, we saw that the two did not mix. Since heat rises, the hot water stayed on top and did not mix with the cold water.
8th graders learned that convection currents cause tectonic plate movement. This was modeled with cold (blue) and hot (red) water in beakers placed in an aquarium. Students saw how the hot water rose to the top and the cold water stayed at the bottom of the tank.

Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation works to ensure that every child in the U.S., especially those most at risk, grows up with dependable access to enough nutritious food to enable them to lead a healthy, productive life. As part of its commitment, Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation wants to engage and reward students who have made a significant impact against hunger and are driving awareness and mobilizing youth to be catalysts for innovative models and solutions to eliminate childhood hunger. The scholarship is named for the Foundation's founder and former president, Steve Brady, who was an unstoppable champion in the fight to end hunger.
The Foundation is looking for students, ages 5 to 25, who are using their creativity, academic studies (like STEM), and organizational skills to help fight hunger in their communities. The Foundation would like to learn about the communities scholars serve and how they engage others in these efforts. National Scholarship winners receive a $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 grant for their hunger-related charity.
In addition, National winners will attend an all-expenses-paid trip to the Foundation’s annual fundraising event, the Sodexo Charity Classic Presented by PepsiCo, which will take place on June 10-12, 2024, in Marco Island, FL. They will meet top global and national food, beverage, supplies, equipment and facilities management companies who support the Stop Hunger mission.
The annual application period is October 5 December 5.

We want to warmly welcome two familiar faces who have now officially taken on the role of principals of Vineland High School! Justin Adams and Jaqueline Roman-Alvarez were named to the positions at Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting, taking over for Suzette DeMarchi, who took on the role of Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the district this summer.
Alvarez was born and raised in Vineland and is an alumnus of Vineland High School. After graduation, she attended Rowan University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in Health Promotions. She later attended Seton Hall University and received a Master of Arts in Human Resources Training and Development. Alvarez began her teaching career as an adjunct professor in 1998 at Cumberland County College, where she remained until 2001. She worked as a Vineland Housing Authority teacher from 2001-2006 and started her teaching role at Vineland High School, where she worked as a Spanish teacher from 2001-2015. During her teaching tenure, Alvarez became World Language Department Chairperson, a role she held from 2011-2015. In 2015, she was promoted to VHS Assistant Principal, where she has remained until this year. Alvarez has been honored twice for her accomplishments. In 2017, she received the Perfil Latino TV, Inc. Adelante V Educational Leader Award and was named the 2022-23 Vineland Public Schools Administrator of the Year.
Adams was born and raised in Millville and is an alumnus of Millville Senior High School. Following graduation, he attended Rowan University, where he had a dual major and received a Bachelor of Arts in History and Elementary Education. He later attended Wilmington University and received his Master’s in Educational Leadership. Adams has been fully committed to our Vineland students for 12 years, starting his teaching career in 2011 at D’Ippolito Elementary School, where he student taught under Dave Thies and then taught kindergarten and first grade. He remained at D’Ippolito until the 2019-20 school year when he was named Assistant Principal at VHS. Adams also served on many committees during his time at D’Ippolito, including serving as VEA representative from 2013-19; as a member of the Vertical Transition Team for Pre-K to elementary school; the Rowan University Liason for Professional Development Schools, during which Rowan and D’Ippolito were nationally recognized during the 2018-19 school year; and was the teacher-leader of the D’Ippolito Dragons Sports Club.
Both will assume their roles starting Thursday. Adams will helm the Tanner (9-10) Building and Alvarez the South (11-12) Building. We wish them the best of luck as they start their new journey at VHS and eagerly look forward to the positive changes they’ll bring to our school community!
The Board of Education honored four Vineland High School African American Experience students who developed an initiative for city council to dedicate a city street to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The City of Vineland ceremony is set for 10 a.m., October 11, at 187 N. 3rd Street in Vineland. We applaud the outstanding efforts of these students!
Don't forget to stop out tonight for the Title I meeting!
In Mrs. Jessica Castro's sixth-grade science class at Veterans Memorial Middle School, students were able to construct a model of a landform and predict how water would flow over its surface. Students did this by replicating precipitation with a water bottle and spraying it over their landform. Students looked at how the water was moving
over their landforms and looked for how their setup produced reservoirs (e.g., rivers, lakes, and so on). Overall, students came to the conclusion that water runs away from high elevations and runs to lower elevations thanks to the help of gravity while reservoirs typically form towards the bottom of various landforms.
Thank you to the students from D'Ippolito and Rossi Elementary Schools for leading the flag salute at this evening's Board of Education meeting! Fantastic job 🇺🇸
